Green Purchasing Policy

When making purchasing decisions, the Central Islip Public Library will consider environmental and sustainability factors in addition to price, performance, and value. Our goal is to reduce the environmental footprint of Library operations while supporting the health and sustainability of our community.

Guiding Principles

The following principles will guide Library purchasing practices:

•             Buy Only What is Needed -Reduce excess by purchasing supplies only as needed and consolidating orders when possible.

•             Choose Environmentally Preferred Products - Prioritize items that are sustainably produced, recyclable, compostable, reusable, or biodegradable.

•             Minimize Toxicity - Select the least harmful products that effectively meet our needs.

•             Support Local Economy - Favor products sourced from local or regional vendors and support local businesses whenever feasible.

Implementation

The Administration will oversee the implementation of this policy and ensure that staff responsible for purchasing are trained and informed about environmentally preferable options.
