About the Library
The Central Islip Public Library serves the nearly 40,000 residents that reside within the boundaries of the Central Islip School District. The Library is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents. The Library is overseen by a publicly elected five member Board of Trustees. The Library Director is responsible for Library operations. Library Board meetings are open to the public.
The Central Islip Public Library was founded in 1952, and was originally located in a storefront at 81 Carleton Avenue. In 1972, the residents of the Central Islip Union Free School District approved the purchase of the land and construction of the current Library building on Hawthorne Avenue. On March 15, 1976, the new Library building was opened to the public. The Central Islip Public Library has since evolved into a true community center, offering a variety of programs, technologies and services. The Library holds collections that include a wide range of titles and subjects, adapting to our patron’s ever-changing informational, educational and entertainment needs. The Library has spaces for local community groups to meet, and holds workshops, literacy programs, cultural activities and more. The Library has embraced digital technologies by providing access to a wide variety of databases, e-books, audiobooks and digital media.
The Central Islip Public Library continues to adapt and grow by integrating technology and new collections, and fostering community engagement. As the Library’s services and collections continually evolve, we seek to serve the community through excellent patron service, such remains at the core of the Library’s mission.
